Bob's Red Mill
On our trip to Oregon, my Daughter suggested going to
Bob’s Red Mill, in Milwaukie, OR.

Bob's Red Mill
It’s kind of located in the middle of a industrial part of town, so when we first drove into the area we where a bit confused. But suddenly, right in front of us was this huge red building.

All the grainy goodness.
Usually when I go to the store I see only 3 or 4 Bob’s Red Mill items. At Bob’s it was a bit overwhelming how many things they carry.

Bob's Red Mill
I wanted to buy everything and I don’t even bake! We did get a gluten free chocolate chip cookie mix and a bean soup mix.

Bob's Red Mill
We ate breakfast there two times. Good food, full of grainy goodness.

Voodoo Donuts, Portland, OR
I think it’s a law that when you visit Portland you have to go to Voodoo Donuts. Here is the a photo of the front of the line.

The almost there group.
Here is the middle of the line.

The we're-in-it-for-the-long-haul group.
And finially, the end of the line.
(For fun, count how many skinny people are in line. It’s easier than counting the other ones.)
(PS- Even though I am not in this line I am one of the other ones.)

Evil Pastries.
So we ate at Voodoo Donuts II on the other side of the river. No line whatsoever.

Floozie donuts.
Deciding on which tasty whor-ish donut to eat was hard.

Tasty Sin-nuts.
I know Satan is involved somehow.

Our choices.
Here is what we got. I got a tasty cream fill thingy and my Daughter chose the Captain, My Captain donut.
I would like to thank Renate and Emma for their Voodoo Donut recommendation, including the tip on avoiding the lines at the original Voodoo and partaking in the evil at Voodoo Donuts II.

Cargo, Portland Oregon
So where do I begin? Our trip lasted 2 weeks and we spent 2 whole days in Portland. We started out in the Pearl District. Lots of nice shops, but our favorites where Powell’s Books and a shop called Cargo. Let’s face it. Powell’s has everything book-wise, including rare books. And Cargo is a import shop that is totally filled with fun stuff.

Cargo, Portland Oregon
Cargo is easy to spot because of their not-so-subtle exterior.

Cargo, Portland Oregon
And, their not-so-subtle interior.

Some guy we met in Portland.
The people there weren’t very subtle either.

Choose a hair cut.
There is so much inside of Cargo I didn’t know where to begin, especially when taking photo’s. So I decided to take pictures that would show pretty colors. Oh…. Pretty beads……Oh, the pretty colors…..

The gang.
The whole gang turned up.

Minions in a box.
My favorite item at Cargo’s is the Minions in the box. Who doesn’t want minions.

Hypnotic gaze.
Can’t take your eyes aways, can you. Feel their stare as the little black eyes penetrate your soul.

Stare deeper.
Good minions…
*PLEASE NOTE* Minion images where taken by my Daughter. If I didn’t say this she said she would be very upset.
More trip stuff to come….

A Good House by Andrea Zuill
In a week I’ll be heading to Oregon. My Daughter and I will drive as fast as we can up to Portland then leisurely make our way down the coast. We’re very interested in finding cool craft, art and farming places to visit. So I am asking you, my ass- kicking readers, do you have any tips for our Oregon trip?
Please remember that I am a artist and I am poor. I am not looking for anything 4 star. The descriptive words humble, homey, crafty, and hole-in-the-wall best fits the type of places we are looking for. I also might bring some of my prints so if there is anything that can be traded for art that would be excellent. Oh, and I also can do a small quilting class.
Thanks!

- Artwork by Andrea Zuill at Leaping Lotus, Solana Beach, CA
I have opened a small retail space at a store called Leaping Lotus in Solana Beach, CA . Leaping Lotus is located in a well know area called Cedros Design District. I am very excited. I know, I know, my space is the size of a SMALL walk in closet , but it’s all mine!
I don’t have a very fun name for my little store. I just call it Artwork by Andrea Zuill. I didn’t want to call it Badbird or The Doom Girls since I have stocked my space with both types of prints.
I hope some of you can visit my cubby, but only one person at a time. I don’t think two people will fit.
( Just kidding! I think at least one and a half people can fit.)

Okay, I swear to god that I didn’t realize what I was doing until I had almost finished this image. I mean, there I was, working away on my gnome house. “It’s so cute”, I thought. Then, looking at the mushrooms, I thought, “That’s kind of funny. The mushrooms looks like little penises…. Hey, wait a minute. The house looks like a…… ”
So , I made a very phallic discovery. What in the heck was I thinking about when I was sketching this. I really like my little gnome house, except that it looks like a huge penis.
This reminds me of a quilt I saw on Craftsters. A newbie quilter posted her first project. It was a kind of pinwheel design. She was very proud. All of us reading her post noticed right away that what she had created was a swastikas quilt. Someone ask her if she meant to make swastikas. “No”, she posted sadly, she had not meant to make a Nazi quilt.
If you think that you, a friend or some little tyke would like a picture of a huge penis shaped gnome house hanging on their wall, drop me a note, because this print will NOT be going up at my Etsy store.

Free Candy by Andrea Zuill
I’ve been reading your advice, not only from my blog but on Flickr. Thinking things over I’ve decided that I wanted the house to look sweeter. So I redesigned the house and changed the colors. Everyone seems to like the sign in the front yard so that is back with the house. I liked the candy canes, but I changed them into a fence. I added Hugs and Kisses (OXOX) as trim on the house. I wanted to have decoration to the outside of the house but I didn’t want it too busy. Lastly, I needed one more item to quietly make the house more dangerous. After quite a lot of thought I designed skull and crossbone smoke coming from the chimney.

The Forbidden Zone by Andrea Zuill
I ‘ve been playing with the idea of creating artwork featuring buildings. The first idea I had was of the gingerbread house from Hansel and Gretal. I like the idea of a cute, sweet house being the home of a evil witch. The first image I came up with was to have gingerbread men “scarecrows” that are simular to the scarecrows from The Planet of the Apes. I remember in one Hansel and Gretal movie that the gingerbread men around the witches home where actually transformed children.

Free Candy by Andrea Zuill
Second, I had the idea to make the image a bit simpler. So you can see in the image about that I just have the house and a sign reading, “Free Candy”. I trying to decide which image I like best. I personally get of kick out of the scarecrows and the title, “the Forbidden Zone”. It all makes me feel very clever. But, there is a bit of charm in the simplicity of the image Free Candy.
Please give me your thoughts. I need help.

Kinglet by Andrea Zuill
You probably have noticed that I haven’t been blogging much lately. I’ve had a lot on going on. Here is what I have been up to:
1. Designing the above print, Kinglets, which will soon be available.
2. After naming the apricot tree in the front yard Mister Snack-y, I have discovered that there is a limit to the amount of apricots a human should eat.
3. I have been procrastinating about buying new bras. My current, and only, bra is a sad looking beige thing. I hate shopping for bras. It’s hard to find a bra that is comfortable
and that has the extra support beams I need.
5. My friend for 15 years has died. He was my bird. Sigh….
6. My daughter has come back from college. Her boyfriend came to visit. I miss being able to walk around the house naked.
7. I am angry because after losing a bunch of weight I have gained half of it back. So angry….
8. I have just started a new retail space at the Cedros Design District in Solana Beach, CA. It’s a little cubby hole full of fun.
9. I have a leak under my kitchen sink.
That is that.
