Creating an Art Quilt

Monday, December 14th, 2009

How does one go about creating a art quilt?  I won’t get into the details about discovering your creative voice, love of fiber, personal symbolism  and bizzare fabric fetishes for now.   I just want to give you a idea of what goes through my mind.

First I had the creative urge.  Then I fell in love with Jude Hills’s quilt, Hearts in the Wind. This quilt got me thinking about what I wanted my next quilt to be.  Hearts have meaning for me.  They don’t represent love for me, but emotions.

There is something very primal yet delicate about Jude’s work.  Her work feels personal.  What might be considered flaws for some quilters (tears, holes, loose threads, illregular shapes) are what give Jude’s work soul.

So when I started to create my quilt there where certain elements I wanted to keep in mind.  I wanted to use the symbol of a heart.  I wanted my quilt to scream handmade.  And I wanted the stitches to provide texture and a kind of humanity.

Then I saw The Silly Bodilly’s Work Quilt.  I just melted for the playful use of colors and shapes.  I personally have trouble dealing with such a large compositions, so I decided to stick with a simple composition.  Like the Hearts in the Wind quilt, this quilt has great texture provided by the quilting.  Bodilly’s quilting is a bit more formal yet she is able to keep the humanity in her stitches.

The color’s Bodilly used are strong and natural.  They convey a strengh that isn’t forced.

From Bodilly’s quilt I learned that I wanted a quilt that was strong and solid.  I also wanted abstract shapes.  And, like with Jude’s quilt, quilting stitches that add a zesty texture.

This is my Quilt.  Quite simple.  Not finished yet.  It has a heart.  It is hand quilted with texture in mind.  It has a couple abstract elements.  I believe the colors give a feeling of strength, even though the yellow applique has a softness about it.  It looks very handmade.  It’s small, about 30″ x 30″ since I find that I don’t enjoy doing large quilts.  The fabric is soft to the touch.  There is a small bit of embroidery (clck on quilt images to see the details better).

Sometime soon I will go into the actual steps of how my designs evolve into the finished design.  Just so you know, it took four false starts to get to this design.

Also, did you notice that I was able to use the word zesty in this blog?  I believe that I have never, ever used this word in any of my writing.

Star and Bubble Gum Quilt

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Star and Bubble Gum Quilt.  20″x20″, Cotton with hand embroidery and Quilting.

Another star quilt.  I’m not sure where this image came from, it just popped up in my head.  I love the candy colors.

This design allowed me to add more embroidery.  Thank god.  I love my last quilt, but the lack of embroidery made me nervous.

Abstract Quilt called Three Stars.

Sunday, November 15th, 2009

Okay, you guys better be nice to me about this quilt.  It’s doesn’t have a bird, deer or heart in.  It’s a abstract.  I love it and if you make fun of it I will find you and pinch you real hard.

I am thinking of doing more of these.  It was so freeing.  Just shapes and colors.

The only embroidery is around the stars.  I outlined them with a black blanket stitch.

This quilt is made of cotton and it totally hand sewn including the quilting.  It measures 20″ x 30″.  You can get really good views of this quilt if you click on the images.

The shapes are based on doddles, and shapes I have found in hex signs.

Can there be to much play time?

So I was thinking, “My quilts really don’t have to have a bunny, bird or deer in them do they?”.   What if I was to make a abstract quilt?  I’ve been looking at the Gee’s Bend Quilts.  I love them.  They are so hand made.  They’re very much like abstract expressionist art but have a more human touch since they are made with fabric.  Not just any fabric but with fabric that has been worn by their makers and their families.

So I am playing with abstract designs.  Which is harder then one might think.  I have been getting inspiration not only from the Gee’s Bend Quilters, but some of my Internet friends like  Silly BooDilly and Jude Hill.

I think that I am liking the way this is going.

Notice the background fabric?  It’s the same background fabric from the embroidered piece in the last blog entry.  I love this fabric.  It’s Aged Muslin .  The company that manufactures it only has it in colors of off-white, tan, etc…

I would love to find someone that makes aged color fabric.  I know I can age it myself, but I don’t want too.  You can’t make me.

  More hex signs.

This hex looks Japanese to me.

Oh, I almost forgot.  All of the embroidery was actually stitched on a light colored muslin.  I embroidered these pieces on my last vacation.  When I got home I cut them out and appliqued them to the darker aged muslin.

This includes the magpie. It was also stitched on light colored muslin and appliqued onto the darker muslin.  Why would I do this technique?  Well, I didn’t want to carry a whole bunch of stuff with me on my trip.  All I brought with me was the one piece of fabric, embroidery thread, needle, scissors and a pencil.  All the hexes where drawn freehand onto the muslin in pencil.

I wasn’t in the mood to do the quilting this time.  I chose to tie this quilt off.  I used embroidery thread for the tying.

This was a rather easy quilt to put together.

Sometimes I make mistakes.

I hate when I do this.  The unfinished Love Bird on the right has it’s grain going in the wrong direction.  Or should I say the bias is wrong.  You can’t tell from this photo but the bird on the left lays down nicely.  The bird on the Right doesn’t lay down flat and looks as if it has too much fabric and seems puffy.  I hope that makes sense.

I can’t find the material I used for the birds, so I will remove both birds and stitch on new birds, with the correct bias, onto the quilt.  I have a cream colored fabric with very small pink and burgundy polka dots that will look nice.

I am using the fishbone or herringbone stitch on the leaves.  I haven’t used that stitch for a long time.   I thought it needed more of a stem down the middle of the leaf so I wove a yellow running stitch down the middle.  If you look close you will see small blue running stitches used for extra leaf veining.  The green fabric has a fushia design printed on it.  All together it makes for a very busy leaf.  I will not be outlining the leaves.

This is not a very funny post, so I have a joke.

A man was walking down the street.  As he was walking he came upon a blind man with a seeing-eye dog. Suddenly, the blind man picks up his dog by it’s back feet and begins swing him around his head.  The man says to the blind man, “What are you doing to your dog?”.  The blind man replies, “Oh, I’m just looking around”.
