Tile Quilt Revival: Reinventing a Forgotten Form

On my trip to Texas I was able to spend some little time exploring the town of Las Cruce, NM. I stopped by a cool quilt shop called Organ Mountain Quilt Shop. I bought a bunch of fabric and a book called, Tile Quilt Revival: Reinventing a Forgotten Form, by Carol Gilham Jones and Bobbi Finley. The beautiful quilt on the cover is what caught my eye.

Tile Quilt Revival book gives a nice history of this rare type of quilt. The instructions on how to create your own tile quilt is very clear and quite easy. And, to my extreme excitement, this quilt is best done by hand! EEEEEkkkkkk!

So, to sum up this book, wonderful and easy techique, interesting history, beautiful patterns included, hand work prefered.

Ah, tis Spring and it is the time for this artist’s fancy to turn to her upcoming show in Marfa, TX. I have about half of the images I need for the show and sketches for the rest. The sun is shining so it’s nice and warm in the studio. Bees are buzzing. The apricot tree has finished blooming and there is small green fruit. The Hormonal birds chirping like little feathery idiots.

I think that I am obsessing. The last couple years I have lost a lot of weight. I have to stay away from some foods that I lose control over. Cake is one of those foods. A small thin slice will never do.

Also, one of my most favorite bands is Cake.

Usually, people who know me can tell when I have been painting. I wear sloppy old clothes, which are paint stained. 9 times out of 10 my hair will be unwashed and on a really bad day I will not shower. When I paint all my thought and being goes into the piece I’m working on. I’m not the best house keeper, but my home becomes a disaster when the oil paints come out.

At risk to my personal hygiene and my home being condemned I have finished 2 new oil paintings. Both are 36″ x 36″, oil on canvas. The bird piece is called Bunting and the deer piece is called Sacred Deer.

I used to play pretend a lot when I was a child.

I spent a lot of time, as a child, pretending that I was a animal. I can only assume this is reflected in this painting.

I’ve been painting again and I have painted some little birds. Since spring is here, little birds are everywhere. I believe these birds have a bad case of the Spring Hormonals. Their chirps are loud, they’re fighting a lot, and when I was hiking the other day I was almost mugged by a bunting.
