Embroidered Dog Portrait II

Pattern transfer

I have transfered the design to muslin fabric.  I used a Heat Transfer pencil.

Starting the embroidery

Sorry for such a bad image.  I basically stitched ( using the stem stitch) all the lines ( of the dog only) in a dark grey.  I have started putting in the black shading for the area of the eyes and nose.  For shading I am using a runnning stitch that creates a nice dot pattern.

At this point, the portrait can go either way, good or bad.  I have been known for ripping out a lot of embroidery if I am not happy with it.  Buttons face colors so far are black and dark grey.  I am hoping to put in some warm colors.   I having a bit of trouble seeing the personality in this piece.  His face is so furry it’s hard to catch his expression.

When I look at Button’s photo, all the personality is expressed through his left eye, which does make it tough. It will be interesting to see how you make him shine through all that face fuzz. :)

I love this and I think you should trust it will work – I see that little crazy character shining through. I’m very happy I found your site – I embroider once in a blue moon and am working on a jacket for my step-daughter. It has a quote from Tim Burton’s Alice on the front – ‘But this is my dream. I’ll decide where it goes from here.’ and I am going to do a rendition of Burton’s sketch of the Mad Hatter on the back in running stitch. The material is mostly linen with a bit of stretch so it is somewhat weird to work on but is looking good so far. Many, many years ago, I embroidered the back of a jean-jacket for my then husband – it was a Haida design of a whale done entirely in black, red and white satin stitch. He lost it in a fishing boat. geeeeesh. I could only do this for love.
