Embroidered Dog Portraits

Purlene by Andrea Zuill

Some of my first needlework samples I ever posted where  portraits of dogs.

Maggie by Andrea Zuill

I am a little dog crazy and these portraits where great fun.

I even got a commission to do the piece above.  And, yes, that is the actual dog’s expression.

I have decided to try another dog portrait.  This one will be of a dog named Button.  Button is a terrier mix that was adopted from the Humane Society by friends of mine.  I will post some of my steps  I take to create a portait.  Button will be the first hairy dog I have ever done.  Wish me luck.

yeah, these are okay… ;-) Seriously, these are amazing. I love pet portraits, I’ve a friend who does them in linocut and another who does oils. I just love when the personality shows through and you have definately captured these pups’!

I have an embroidery nerd question – what outline stitch are you using? Is it stem stitch? I am dipping my toes in the vast ocean of free embroidery, and as a childhood cross stitcher I am finding choosing stitches a real challenge! Partly because I am not as neat as I would like, so I am always disattisfied with how they look. But I don’t want to get in a stitch rut, so I’m always interested in other people’s choices!

Wow! I love your drawings and the little dog portraits are wonderful. I especially love the chihuahua. I have a little guy myself and would love to see him done up in thread. I look forward to reading more of your blog.

I LOVE your drawings! so expressive. :)

Maggie looks beautiful. Is she a retriever?
And for the angry dog, I think the flames you put around it was a nice touch. Tells the whole story!
Finally, I knew a dog named “Button”. Lived in Brampton, Ontario
