Art Exhibit at the Escondido Municipal Gallery

Saturday, September 12th, 2009

I am part of a local art exhibition at the Escondido Municipal Gallery.

This is my new fabric sculpture called Rabbit in Disguise.  It is a rabbit wearing a fake mustache.  Sorry for the bad picture of it.

You can do needlework while camping.

I often say that I like to take my needlework on vacation with me.  Here is proof that you can craft while camping.  This quilt top is taking forever to complete since I have been very busy the last couple months.  If it wasn’t for vacations I don’t think I’d ever get this piece done.

Well, I’ve got to go now since I have to try to remove some pine sap from some fabric.

Bodie, California

Wednesday, September 9th, 2009

Labor Day my family went camping up on the Eastern side of the Sierra’s.   We love it up there.  One of the highlights of the Sierra’s is the gold mining town of Bodie.

Now, as you may know, everyone in the world takes pictures of Bodie.  And, I’m sorry all you photographers,  all pictures of Bodie look like everyone elses pictures of Bodie.  I don’t care how beautiful the church is backlit by a beautiful orange sunset or how spooky a photo of the Cain house can look in sepia.  Bodie’s just been photographed too many times.

Now that I have ranted.  Here are my pictures of Bodie.    I tried to see if I could come up with a different view, maybe something a little more personal.

Well, I failed.  But it was still fun.  Me and all those guys with the big lenses taking yet another picture of Bodie.

September’s Free Embroidery Pattern

Sorry, I’m running a bit late.  Here is Bat Boy.  Over the last 20 years I used Bat Boy in a couple different pieces of artwork. This is the first embroidery pattern with this little guy.  I thought he would be very Halloweenie.

Menudo, full of barnyard goodness.

Wednesday, September 2nd, 2009

Lovers of Menudo (the soup) please forgive me for the following article.

I have eaten quite a few unusual things in my days such as gizzards, scrapple,  pig nostrils, alligator assh*le and bee’s knees.  Inspired by Andrew Zimmern, my family and I decided to try Menudo at a local Mexican restaurant.  Let’s just say that I have a bone to pick with Mr. Zimmern.

I truly believe that I am scarred for life.  I should have known when my daughter, who actually ordered the menudo, said that it smelled like hay.  I thought, “I like the smell of hay.”  When she took a bite she said she didn’t care for the texture. I stated that I would like to try.  As soon as I moved the bowl toward me the smell hit me.  The smell reminded me of the county fair, the part with the animals or maybe the time right before Animal Control removes the horse from it’s home because the owners haven’t  properly cleaned the stall.  Being brave, I scooped a spoon full into my mouth.  Remember what I said about the county fair and the horse stall?  Well, times that by 10.

The worst part is that the owner and her daughter where real excited that we wanted to try Menudo.  They said it was an aquired taste like liver and onions.  Well maybe if the liver and onions came out of a animals butt.  I found out today that it takes hours to prepare the tripe (main ingrediant in Menudo) so that it is edible.  Makes you think doesn’t it?  Edible?  I don’t know about that.

I do have to say that the rest of the food was absolutely fantastic.  I love that restauarant.  I believe that the day I tried Menudo I had my first case of food based cultural shock.

Power to all Menudo eaters.
