Feelin’ Rocky Mountain High.

I was thinking of maybe visiting colorado sometime.  I haven’t been there for years.  Does anyone have any ideas for:

1.  Hiking.  I have never hiked above 10,000 ft. before, so I would like suggestions for lower elevation hiking.  I like mountain hiking but I just don’t want to suffer from cerebral edema if I don’t have to.  I am a pro at hiking in the 6,000 to 9,000 ft. range.

2. Craft related things in Colorado.

3. Good Hole-in-the Wall restaurants.  I do NOT like fancy restaurants!  I love Mom and Pop eateries.

4.  Weird yard art and outsider art.

Any help would be appreciated.

  1. I write a column for the Denver Examiner about craft shopping in Denver – I also include any craft shows that are going on. I’ve profiled a few of the wonderful stores around, but feel free to let me know if you have specific things you’re looking for! :) http://bit.ly/ClyCg

Hikes – this site is one of the best around: http://www.hikingincolorado.org/

weird yard art – can’t think immediately, but if I think of something I’ll let you know! :)

    Enjoy your trip!

Colorado is lovely this time of year…not to hot…not to cold.

Pike’s Peak looms over us here in Colorado Springs.

The funky off-beat craft stores are lacking in Colorado Springs.

If you are in Colorado Springs I recommend stopping by Bristol Brewery. I don’t know about the food, but the beer is delicious.

Colorado… *sigh* I love the Rocky Mountain National Park. They have beautiful trails for all skill levels. We usually stay at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park. I don’t know about mom and pop places. We just ask around when we get to where we are going..

If you are near Fort Collins (Northern Colorado off I-25) check out Sweatsville Zoo off of I-25 and Harmony exit. The man that lives there has created acres of sculptures using scrap metal. It’s very funky and very fun.

I went to visit my friend in Boulder, Colorado in September 2007 (posted on my blog) and loved it. Boulder is a really funky place with lots of opportunities for hiking and biking, great farmer’s markets and organic food stores. Lots of cheap and cheerful places to eat – sushi on 10th Street, great buffalo burgers

There you can walk to great hiking trails at Mount Sanitas and the Flatirons but it’s also easy to access Rocky Mountain National Park and a few great hikes there – I too had never hiked about 5000ft (I live at sea level on the east coast of Scotland where our highest mountain is just over 4000 ft) but enjoyed the short hikes that we did – Nymph Lake and Dream Lake with their dark green waters – late September was perfect weather with the aspen all yellow and beautiful!

I went to Manitou Springs (south near Colorado Springs) which is an arty little town near the Garden of the Gods which was fun.

Boulder has a great knitting shop called Shuttles, Spindles and Skeins and lots of neat shops downtown on the Pearl Street Mall, an outdoor pedestrianised shopping mal = the Colorado Artists/Crafts people store, an old fashioned candy store, a fantastic kitchen store, the Boulder Bookstore and Outdoor Divas etc.

I loved Boulder and Rocky Mountain National Park !
