A good friend of mine has been cleaning out the house he inherited from his Mom. Every once in a while he will bring over items that he thinks that I might like. This time he arrived with a white pitcher and wash basin and a few other items that where looking for a new home. In the dark, with a flashlight, he start pulling out stuff. Under all the items I spotted just a corner of what looked like a quilt. Not only a quilt, but a old hand sewn quilt. ( It’s funny how the eyes can pick up on certain items) I pulled it out, almost distroying the washbasin, and asked, “Are you giving this away too?”. He said yes.
Here is a picture of my new antique quilt. It has condition issues, but who cares, it’s mine!!!!!! Any who, I’m guessing from it’s design, fabric and colors that it’s from the 30’s, or 40’s. If anyone has a better guess please let me know.
Here is the mystery. My friend also had this metal embroidery(? ) and bead piece. The decoration is a peacock. I believe that it is a item of clothing, maybe from the Middle East. His family has traveled in that area.
The hoop piece is probably a belt, meaning that it is meant to be worn at the waist. It is fabric, satin and snaps in the back. The snap is very modern. The “needlework” feels very metallic, not soft at all. Everywhere you see a sparkle on the above photo is where there is a bead. There are 2 satin embellished stips that go with it. They have no snaps or anyway to attach them to the belt/hoop piece.
Can you help me figure out what this item is?

Don’t laugh, this is only a guess. It looks to me like the hip belt worn in the 1930/1940 or even more recent by middle east belly dancers. The cords would have just been tucked in and left to hang down the front.
You know, I was thinking that it might have to do with belly dancing too. I’m keeping with the research!
Wow! That quilt is gorgeous! What an incredible find.. and a really good friend! haha I love your blog!
Lucky you!
That is such a beautiful quilt, older handmade things have such an amazing quality about them.
I’m sure you will enjoy it very much. Is it going on the wall or the bed?

I have no clue on the metallic peacock, but the quilt is magnificent!!!!
It looks to be a belt done in goldwork embroidery-
That is a gorgeous quilt. I love that type of design, and the colors are wonderful. Too bad it has condition issues.
