Ta Da! The Snake in the Grass quilt is done!

Snake in the Grass, quilt, by Andrea Zuill   I have finally finished my Snake in the Grass quilt.  Even though I don’t know how long it took me to finish, I do know that I took much more time than any other of my quilt’s.   It measures approx.  30″ x 42″.  It is all cotton, with cotton/poly batting and embroidery thread.  It is all handsewn, with the exception of the very edge.  The quilt’s edge was sewn like a pillowcase on the sewing machine, then turn rightside out.  This quilt has a lot of applique, with up to 6 layers of applique on top of each other, on some of the designs.  The quilting has been done around all the major design elements and the border.

Since I like my work to be funky, you’ll notice that the right side and the left side of the quilt are only loosely mirror images.  Same with the border.  I have no interest in making a very exact quilt.  For inspiration I once again used Pennsylvania Dutch Fratur artwork as inspiration, and indian/oriental needlework.  This quilt was started at the beginning of hiking season when the snakes start to come out into the open.  So far this season I have see about 10 rattle snakes.

Embroidered Butterfly  I have been working on this small embroidery.  I had the idea that I might sell it on Etsy.  What I didn’t expect was the time it took to create this piece.  And It’s not even done!  I probably have about 6 hours into it.  I keep looking at wondering, “where did all the time go?”.  What could I sale this for?  I have no idea.

There used to be bears.

California Grizzly Where I live there used to be bears. Not just any bears but grizzly bears. I live in Southern California. It’s hard to image when driving around SoCal that a huge beast of a animal used to roam in the valleys and foothills. Many people don’t know that in the area where I live, in SoCal, there where never black bears, only grizzlies.

California Grizzly Grizzly bears used to be found in places like Los Angeles, San Francisco, San Luis Obispo, and Sacramento many years ago. Near where I live are places named Bear Valley, Los Oso (spanish for bear), Oso Moutain, and Grizzly Flats. The indians, the Spanish, the Mexican, the 49’ers, and Americans all experience life living amoungst the grizzies. (more…)

I used to play pretend a lot when I was a child.

I spent a lot of time, as a child, pretending that I was a animal.  I can only assume this is reflected in this painting.

Such a little bird….

Saturday, May 10th, 2008

I’ve been painting again and I have painted some little birds.  Since spring is here, little birds are everywhere.  I believe these birds have a bad case of the Spring Hormonals.  Their chirps are loud, they’re fighting a lot, and when I was hiking the other day I was almost mugged by a bunting.
