Old Marfa, new Marfa.

Wednesday, February 20th, 2008

The town of Marfa, where my art is on display at Galleri Urbane, is a small West Texas town.  Every time I visit Marfa I see changes.  At one time Marfa was the home to ranchers and long time Hispanic families.   Since the arrival of Donald Judd, minimalistic sculpture artist, and his purchase of many of the old military buildings, this town has undergone change.  Mr. Judd has passed away but he lives on through the Chinati Foundation.  If you visit Marfa not only will you see the old large former military buildings, but many of the buildings on the main street bare the lettering of Judd.

The arrival of new residents brings more change.  In addition to the cowboys, ranchers, and ranch hands, Marfa is attracting a new population of creators and art lovers.  At my art opening I met writers, artists, film makers, gallery owners and art connoisseurs.   With this migration of creators to this small town comes a new sensibility, a new way of seeing West Texas.  Instead of looking to this expansive and remote land to scratch out a living,  now what is required of this landscape is inspiration.   Big land and big sky gives you time to think.  There is clarity here.  No distractions.  I know for me, returning home to Southern California is a shock and jolt.  There are too many people, buildings, cars and the grocery store is too far away for me to walk to.

Here are a few photographs to illustrate old and new Marfa, Texas.

Back from Marfa.

Monday, February 18th, 2008

After a week I have returned from my trip to Texas.  I had a show at Galleri Urbane located in the West Texas town of Marfa (See previous post for more info on Marfa).   I have many things to write about including more about Marfa, Big Bend National Park, Big Bend National Preserve, Silver City (NM), Fort Davis, javalina, deer, drug smuggling, Shafter (Texas),  but since I just arrived home I will start off with a little bit about my show.

It was great to see my pieces all up at once.  At my house there isn’t enough room to put them all up.  I liked the way the colors played off of each other.  Ree Willaford, the gallery owner, was able to sell 4 of the pieces before the show even opened, meaning that once again the Zuill (this is my last name) family will eat. Hurray!!!!

The opening went great.  There were tons of people.   Also, two very nice families loaned us their vacation homes for our stay which really helped us out.

I would also like to thank my friend Cecilia for letting us stay at her home in Silver City, New Mexico.  I will talk about her more in a later blog.

White Deer Quilt, finished embroidery and border

Monday, February 4th, 2008

Since I last wrote about this quilt I have finished all the embroidery, and appliqued the image onto a green background. I appliqued the deer image onto the background fabric just like I appliqued all the small fabric shapes and the deer. Notice that the wavy edge around the deer is on purpose.  It also looks kind of weird because of my camera angle.  I finished the edge with the maid’s hair stitch.    I had originally planned for a bright red border, but then I discovered this acid green.  I think it makes the image pop.

Farewell to my Children

Friday, February 1st, 2008

Well, it’s time to say farewell to my Children, ie my artwork.   20 oil paintings have left my studio and are heading to Galleri Urbane in Marfa, Tx.  Now it’s time for, at the very least, a day or two of relaxation.

If you wish to see artwork for my upcoming show, click the category “oil paintings”.
