Javelina, aka Pig Lizard

In New Mexico and Texas lives an animal known as a Javelina, or Collard Peccary.  These animals thrive in the desert.  These tough animals can eat prickly pear cactus, spines and all.  Also, they are not pigs.  I know this because I thought they where some type of wild pig, but was told that even though they look like pigs, sound like pigs, have feet like pigs, and if eaten, taste like a pig, still, they are not pigs.  They may be more closely related to a bear or possibly a racoon.  So, me and my husband started calling them pig-lizards.  Those of you who have seen the movie Galaxy Quest will know what a pig-lizard is.

Dig it! I was just telling my husband today that my parents are cacti. I was gonna blog something about the care and handling of cacti. The pig with the cacti crown might be related to me…looks like my Brother!

One of the coolest things about Javalina; when viewed head on, they almost disappear. They’re amazingly skinny things.

    and the babies are darling!

    Love your drawings of ‘em!
