Let’s talk about Artist Block.

Like all artists I go through periods where it seems that all the creativity has been drained out of me.  I have a few techniques that help me get back my vision.

1. Play.  Sometimes I get too serious about my artistic vision.  Do a stupid or silly painting, print, etc.  Nobody has to see it, it’s just for fun.

2.  Experiment.  Try a different medium.  I switch around from oil paints, watercolors, drawings, digital, fabric, mosaic and others.  It helps keep me interested.

3.  See.  Look at other peoples work.  The internet is great for this.  Other peoples work always inspires me.  When you see work you like ask yourself questions like, “What is it about this piece that I like?”

4. Rest.  Sometimes you just need a break.  Put down those brushes, pencils, needles, etc.  and go to a movie, read a book, visit a friend, or just stop thinking about your art.

5. Health.  I suffer from Anxiety Disorder and Depression.  Before I got treatment I was completely unable to create.  Illness of many kinds can leave you depressed, tired or weak.  If your dry spell lasts for a long time and you feel out of sorts, you might consider seeing your doctor.

For the ladies: When I am on my period, I can’t draw!  PMS can be a problem for some.

6. Detox.  I have never taken recreational drugs, but I have known artists that do.  I have been told that various drugs,  (including alcohol) just don’t effect some people like they do “Other” people.  Well, literally all the people I personally know who partake in drugs wind up having a problem with them.

7.  To your own self be true.  Many times friends, family, spouses don’t understand the creative drive.   I believe being a artist isn’t something you choose to be, it is something you where born to be.  You need to personally acknowlege that you are a artist.  It helps to surround yourself with other creative people.  It’s like your own personal support group.

I hope this helps you if you are feeling the BLOCK.
